Butano State Park Stream Enhancement Project

Client

San Mateo County Resource Conservation District

Location

PESCADERO, CA

Project Description

SRT developed and shepherded a complete stream enhancement project from assessment through construction for improving water system performance at Little Butano Creek, in Pescadero, CA. We produced conceptual design, basis of design reports, detail drawings and provided engineering services during construction (ESDC). We also wrote the operations plan, enabling the State Park to draw from the Little Butano Creek during winter surplus months and store the water for use during summer seasons, and therefore improve the Creek’s summer flow for Steelhead Trout and other local fish species. We improved water system performance, including water savings through water loss analysis and created documents that secured grant funding from the San Mateo County Resource Conservation District to build a new, 100,000-gallon raw water storage tank.

Unique Challenges

  • The CCU Complex wild fire burned the park’s power supply, creating delays and technical obstacles. Despite this setback, SRT worked closely with the state park, balancing for costs and constructability through staff changes and contractor turnover. We served as inspector and construction oversight as well as providing specialized technical guidance for contractors.

Value Added By SRT

SRT created trust through our high-touch expertise. We served as a steadfast technical leader through setbacks and unforseen complexities arising from natural disaster impacts and contractor changes. We ultimately delivered a well-calibrated water distribution system; by adding a new, raw water storage tank, we enabled the park to conserve winter runoff for summer use.
