Granada Force Main Replacement

Client

Sewer Authority Mid-Coastside

Location

Half Moon Bay, CA

Project Description

SRT did emergency design on the replacement of the Granada Force Sewage Main when there were significant breaks in the 40 year old pipeline. The leakage occurred behind a preschool and adjacent to sensitive gas lines. SRT designed the repair, replacement and bypass systems to be flexible and operational. The existing metal pipe was not previously able to be shut down for cleaning or inspection. With SRT’s intervention, the new pipe can go offline for repairs and maintenance. SRT performed all associated permitting while keeping the facility operating during the pipe replacement procedure and working with the community to mitigate the effects on the adjacent preschool and completing the work within one year.

Unique Challenges

  • SRT intervened to update the pipeline on the heels of the San Bruno PG&E explosion fire, when the presence of an adjacent gas line created a hazard in the context of a weakened gas network. The coastal location also presented challenges for PG&E to service, creating the need for SRT’s utmost diligence in coordinating permitting efforts and work with other utilities in a shared trench.

Value Added By SRT

SRT created and facilitated a rapid emergency response and a durable, long-term solution for a critical function in a sensitive, community-facing location.
